Environmental &
Sustainability Policy.

SL Joinery Studio · London, United Kingdom

1. Our Commitment

At SL Joinery Studio, we recognise that the pursuit of "Crafted Space. Flawless Detail." must go hand in hand with environmental stewardship. As a vertically integrated studio managing the design, manufacture, and installation of bespoke architectural woodwork across the UK, we have a responsibility to minimise our ecological footprint. We are committed to integrating sustainable practices across our 14,000 sq ft workshop, our supply chains, and our installation sites, ensuring that our zero-tolerance precision benefits not only our clients but also the environment.

2. Responsible Material Sourcing

The foundation of our craft is timber—a naturally renewable resource when managed correctly. We are dedicated to procuring materials that meet strict environmental standards:

  • Certified Timber: We prioritise the use of solid hardwoods, fine veneers, and engineered timbers sourced from responsibly managed forests, primarily seeking FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified suppliers.
  • Low-Impact Finishes: We actively source and utilise low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and water-based adhesives, lacquers, and finishes to preserve indoor air quality and reduce harmful atmospheric emissions.
  • Ethical Supply Chain: We partner with suppliers who share our environmental ethos, demanding transparency in the sourcing of all raw materials, from substrates to speciality veneers.

3. Efficient Workshop Operations

Our 14,000 sq ft London production facility is the heart of our operations. We continuously invest in making our manufacturing processes as energy-efficient and low-impact as possible:

  • Energy Management: We monitor and aim to reduce our energy consumption by utilising modern, energy-efficient CNC machinery and LED lighting systems throughout the workshop.
  • Dust & Emissions: Our state-of-the-art dust extraction systems ensure a safe, clean working environment for our craftsmen while preventing particulate pollution from entering the local atmosphere.
  • Resource Efficiency: Our precision-engineering approach (operating to ±0.3mm tolerances) inherently reduces material waste caused by errors and rework.

4. Waste Reduction & The Circular Economy

We operate under the principle of reducing, reusing, and recycling wherever feasible to keep waste out of landfill:

  • Wood Waste Utilisation: Clean sawdust, off-cuts, and timber waste generated during manufacture are segregated. Where possible, these are repurposed for biomass heating or sent to specialised recycling facilities to be turned into chipboard or agricultural bedding.
  • Packaging Reduction: We utilise reusable transit blankets and recyclable materials to protect our joinery during transport, actively minimising single-use plastics and shrink wrap.
  • Responsible Disposal: All hazardous waste (such as finish and solvent residues) is isolated and disposed of strictly in accordance with UK environmental regulations via licensed waste carriers.

5. Sustainable Logistics & Installation

Serving clients from Mayfair and Chelsea to broader UK commercial developments requires significant logistical coordination. We strive to reduce the carbon footprint of our transport operations:

  • Route Optimisation: We consolidate deliveries from our workshop to our sites to reduce mileage.
  • Clean Transport: As a London-based studio, we ensure our vehicle fleet complies with ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) standards, actively exploring transitions to electric or hybrid commercial vehicles.
  • Site Management: During installation, our teams strictly adhere to site-specific environmental plans, ensuring responsible waste management and minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

6. Designing for Longevity

True sustainability in joinery means creating products that do not need to be replaced.

  • Built to Last: We engineer our commercial amenity fit-outs—from high-traffic reception desks to wellness spaces—for maximum durability.
  • Timeless Craftsmanship: By combining robust engineered cores with premium veneers and flawless jointing, we extend the life cycle of our architectural woodwork, keeping materials in use for generations rather than years.

7. Continuous Improvement & Compliance

SL Joinery Studio is committed to continually reviewing and improving our environmental performance. We pledge to:

  • Comply with all applicable UK environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Provide ongoing training to our craftsmen, designers, and installation teams to ensure this policy is understood and executed at every level.
  • Regularly review our sustainability targets and update our practices as new green technologies and sustainable materials become available.

This policy is communicated to all employees, sub-contractors, and suppliers, and is available to clients and stakeholders upon request.
